Match Group inks major AI deal with OpenAI to enhance dating apps and business operations using ChatGPT

QUICK ZAPS

Match Group, the parent company of popular dating apps like Tinder, Match, and OKCupid, has signed a deal to use AI from OpenAI. As part of the agreement, Match Group will get over 1,000 licenses for ChatGPT, OpenAI's conversational AI model.

Match Group plans to use ChatGPT to help its employees with various work tasks like coding, design, analysis, and communications. However, only trained Match Group staff will have access to OpenAI's tools to keep corporate data secure. Employees must also complete mandatory training on responsible AI use before accessing the tools.

The press release announcing the deal was actually written by ChatGPT. While intended to enthusiastically share the news, the AI-generated text was a bit over-the-top in its praise. It raised some eyebrows with cringey lines about ChatGPT being a "wingman."

Beyond this deal, Match Group sees big potential for AI across its dating apps. The company expects AI to improve profile creation, matching, and the post-match experience. It aims to use AI to evolve existing apps and test standalone AI apps. Match Group is investing $20-30 million in AI innovations for 2024.

This agreement gives Match Group access to powerful AI to assist employees and potentially enhance its dating services. However, the overly enthusiastic press release showed that human oversight is still needed when AI generates marketing content.
