Need Help Writing? Chrome's New AI Tool Does It For You

QUICK ZAPS

Google has introduced a new experimental feature in Chrome called "Help me write" which uses AI to assist users with writing online. The tool is powered by Google's Gemini AI and aims to help fill out forms, write reviews, or draft messages by suggesting relevant text based on the current webpage. It understands the context of what a user is viewing to pull details like product features into its suggestions.

When right-clicking a text field, a small popup window appears next to it with optional prompts. The user can choose one and it will generate a draft message or review incorporating information from the page. For example, if on a hotel booking site it could write a polite request to check in early drawing on details about the hotel. It also claims to consider the user's preferred tone, allowing adjustments between casual and professional.

However, the tool has limitations. It is currently only available for English in the US and some have doubts about how much time it truly saves over writing it yourself. There are also risks like generating fake reviews easily that need addressing.

While it could benefit those with disabilities or limited English, most people may find it an unnecessary extra step for simple writing tasks.
